Abstract

Research on oral health has fundamentally transformed as a result of studying dental structures and materials at the submicron level. For non-destructive 3D imaging, micro-CT is still the preferred method, but it is unable to capture those really tiny features under a micron. With its amazing sub-micron accuracy, which enables us to view things like dentinal  tubules, microscopic fissures, cementum layers, and even the dispersion of filler particles, nano-CT is the best option in this situation. This review delves into the technical reasons why nano-CT is superior to other techniques, how it has become indispensable for researching restorative materials and complex root canal shapes, and its cutting-edge applications, such as using contrast agents to create virtual histology, testing the effectiveness of nanotechnology against biofilms, and providing hard data on biomechanics for more gentle endodontic techniques.
